How much does SEO cost in 2026?

Realistic SEO pricing in 2026: the setup, retainer and project models, typical ranges for a small Austrian business, and the red flags to avoid.

Ask three SEO providers what they charge and you will get three wildly different numbers — €150 a month, €800 a month, €4,000 for a project. None of them is lying. They are selling different things under the same word. Here is how to read the price and know what you are actually buying.

SEO pricing has one honest rule: you are paying for someone’s time and judgement applied to your site over weeks or months. Anything that promises results without that — instant rankings, a guaranteed number one — is selling a different, worse thing.

The three ways SEO is priced

Almost every offer falls into one of three models. Knowing which one you are looking at tells you most of what you need.

  • One-off setup — a fixed fee to get the foundations right: technical fixes, page structure, titles and meta, local profile, structured data. You pay once and own the result. Best for businesses that mainly need to stop losing rankings to fixable problems.
  • Monthly retainer — an ongoing fee for continuous work: content, link building, monitoring, adjustments. Makes sense when you compete for valuable search terms that others are also chasing every month.
  • Project-based — a scoped one-time price for a defined job: an SEO audit, a migration, a batch of service pages. Good when you know the specific thing you need done.

What each price should actually include

Planning an SEO project and budget for a small business

A price is only meaningful next to a deliverable. Before you agree to anything, make the provider name what you get:

  • A setup fee should include a technical audit and fixes, keyword and competitor research, on-page optimisation of your core pages, a configured Google Business Profile, and structured data.
  • A retainer should include a defined amount of content or outreach per month, ongoing technical monitoring, and a plain-language report you can actually understand — not a wall of graphs.
  • Any offer should include access to your own analytics and Search Console. If a provider keeps your data hostage, walk away.

Realistic ranges for a small local business in Austria

For a small local business — a workshop, a practice, a studio here in Graz or anywhere in Austria — honest 2026 numbers look roughly like this:

  • One-off local SEO setup — around €600 to €1,800, depending on how many services and locations you need pages for.
  • Monthly retainer — €300 to €1,200 for a genuine small-business engagement. Below about €250 a month, nobody is doing meaningful work; they are running a template and hoping.
  • One-off audit — €300 to €900 for a real, actionable document rather than an automated PDF.

These sit alongside your build budget, not inside it — worth reading next to the full breakdown of what a website itself costs.

DIY or hire someone?

Plenty of SEO is genuinely DIY-able, and you should do it: keep your Google Business Profile complete, collect reviews, write honest pages about what you do. My SEO basics guide for business owners covers the parts you can own yourself. Where a professional earns their fee is the technical half — site structure, speed, structured data, competitive content — the work that is built once and pays off for years. If your market is competitive, DIY alone rarely gets you into the map pack; the mechanics of that are in my piece on local SEO for small businesses.

Red flags: cheap and “guaranteed” offers

Some offers cost you more than they charge. Walk away when you see:

  • Guaranteed number-one rankings — nobody controls Google’s results; a guarantee is either a lie or a trick using a made-up phrase nobody searches.
  • “SEO” for €49 a month — the time to do real work does not fit that price. You are funding automated link spam that can get you penalised.
  • No named deliverables — if they cannot tell you what they will do this month, they do not know either.
  • Secret methods — real SEO is boring and explainable. Mystery usually means tactics that will not age well.
Good SEO is an investment that compounds. Cheap SEO is a subscription to nothing — and sometimes a bill you pay later in penalties.

What I would budget

For most small businesses I recommend a proper one-off setup first, then deciding on a retainer only once you can see whether your market needs continuous work. That order keeps your money tied to results. If you want a number for your specific situation, see what a setup would cost or tell me your business and your town and I will give you an honest range — including when the answer is “you do not need to pay for this yet”.

Frequently asked

How much does SEO cost per month for a small business?

For a genuine small-business retainer in Austria, expect roughly €300 to €1,200 a month depending on how competitive your market is. Below about €250 a month there is not enough time in the budget for meaningful work — you are usually paying for automated activity that does little, or can even hurt you.

Is a one-off SEO setup enough, or do I need a monthly plan?

For many local businesses a solid one-off setup — technical fixes, page structure, local profile, structured data — is enough to compete, especially in a smaller town. A monthly retainer earns its keep mainly in competitive markets where rivals publish and build links every month. Start with the setup, then decide.

Can anyone guarantee first place on Google?

No. Nobody controls Google’s ranking algorithm, so a guaranteed number-one position is either dishonest or based on an obscure phrase nobody searches. Reputable providers promise specific work and realistic progress, not a fixed position.
